Critical Praise For The Forest Farmer’s Handbook
The Forest Farmer’s Handbook “should instantly become the bible for independent or medium-sized operators who want to do it right, and a secret manual for people in the Forest Service or timber corporations who want to do good stewardship if they get a chance.”
– Ernest Callenbach, author of Ecotopia, in Whole Earth Review“It’s the kind of book you can enjoy reading by the woodstove in the evening, then pack along with your chainsaw in the morning. Filled with photographs and practical information, it covers everything from access roads and equipment to taxes and land-use planning.”
– RAIN“Traditional forestry thinning calls for removing larger trees to release growth in the smaller ones. Camp says nature already decided which trees will grow best … “
– The OregonianThe Forest Farmer’s Handbook “is downright exciting as a challenge to present-day forest managers who are locked into devastating management programs … “
– Wild Oregon“This book is highly recommended to owners of forested land, as well as to others concerned with the wise use of our forests, private and public.”
– NCAP News (Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides)“Smell the woods, listen to the woodpecker, read Orville Camp and you’ve got what you need to be right with your forest.”
– Gary Snyder, Poet & Environmentalist
Natural Selection Forest Management is not just a “tree farm” management system; rather, it is a system of “forest farm” management, and there is a world of difference between the two! A tree farm is managed primarily for trees as a specialized crop and the ecosystem is usually addressed only as necessary to support the growing of that specialized crop, just like hay or any other agricultural product. With Natural Selection Forest Management, the health of the total forest ecosystem is addressed as the priority. Emphasis may be placed on certain more valuable products for human use, but the checks and balances of the ecosystem remain the priority.
About the author
Orville Camp knows forest farming as it truly is — a way of life for himself and his family. He has been studying and experimenting with both conventional and innovative forest management practices for many years. Camp has developed a system of sustainable forest management based only upon natural processes. In Oregon, Camp’s success in forest farming has been acknowledged by the Illinois Valley Soil and Water Conservation District, which awarded him “Farmer of the Year” for outstanding woodland management. He has also been named “Tree Farmer of the Year” for both Josephine and Jackson Counties. Camp is President of the Josephine Forest Farm Association.
